Was Churchill really as great as he is made out to be , perhaps not

Was Churchill really as great as he is made out to be. This was topic of discussion in a recent office canteen gossip among a few friends. Perhaps not, was my view. Why ? Please read on.

Someone accused me of hate against Churchill. Point I wish to make here is that I do not adore but also do not hate this guy Churchill. And yes, his wit and command over language were unique.

But, somehow, I feel strongly that this loud mouth has been given undue credit for things which happened due to several other events and circumstances. As I have said it repeatedly that history is written by victors ( and mainly by those who survive and rule in the end ).

Hence, I have total disregard for the history written by Allies (of USA) ; just like I have a healthy disrespect for parts of our own history, which was written by charlatans. The history the kids read in schools and colleges suppresses so much of the events and personalities and have, on the other hand, built up so many other undeserved personalities.

Like, how many of you have heard of the naval mutiny of 1946 ?  Why is it that an egotist like NAMO has been forced to say in a written RTI response that information about Netaji is classified and even the PM of India can not divulge it ?

The most important reason / contribution to WW 2 was the involvement of USA with its exemplary air fire power and the dedicated airmen.

There are so many nice stories woven around the love lives of the fighter pilots (of USA), and their European, mainly British girlfriends. Ironically, the British have never acknowledged this unique contribution of their young ladies (who kept up the spirits of US soldiers). Unlike unfortunate ladies of France and elsewhere in Continent, who were at mercy of suppressors, the actions of British girls were voluntary.

As I see it, Hitler ( Germany ) lost WW 2 primarily because of the extreme foolishness (usually not expected) due to opening up of war fronts with all his powerful neighbours. In fact, by his own actions and due to lack of saner advice, Hitler ensured his own downfall.

How long can anyone keep a highly strung force fully battle ready for years together.

As the events in Iraq & Afghanistan show, it is difficult even for a strong USA, and Uncle Sam has not been able to sustain the fight.

So, I do not see this guy Churchill as a great visionary or a master war tactician....   but somehow the circumstances were in his favour...
Off course, no harm in accepting the fact that the real hero of the war was the patriotism of the common British populace, who braved the circumstances and kept on the war without caring for the comforts of life and never ever grumbled about the inadequacy of their leadership.
